Opioid analgesic
Mechanism of action
Agaonist for opioid receptor sites, supresses fear and anxiety centers of the brain. Increases peripheral venous capacity, decreases preload and afterload, decrease cardiovascular O2 demand
Indications
Pain control, CHF, Pulmonary Edema, Cardiac related chest pain
Contraindications
Head injury, exacerbation of COPD, decreased LOC, hypotension, hypovolemia, Pt on MAOI’s within past 14 days
Adverse effects
Confusion, sedation, headache, CNS depression, Respiratory depression, apnea, syncope, bradycardia, tachycardia, N/V, dry mouth
Precautions
Potentiates sedative effects f phenothiazine’s.
CNS depressants may potentiate effects, MAOI’s may cause paradoxical excitation
Dose
2-4 mg slow IVP (medical control)
Pedi dose: 0.1-0.2mg/kg IV,IO,IM,SQ
