Piaget’s 3 stages of moral development
- Pre-moral (0-5)
- no rules, unaware of wrongdoing - Heteronome morality (5-10)
- respect for rules out of fear of punishment
- moral absolutism and immanent justice - Independent morality
- flexibility, understanding social rules can bend
Kohlberg’s 3 levels of moral reasoning
- Pre-conventional (punishment orientated, own needs 1st)
- Conventional (approval of others, society + law influence)
- Post conventional (abstract individual values)

Criticism to Kohlberg’s moral reasoning model
- stages don’t seem separate/sequenced/consistent
- moral choices involve more than reasoning
- overlooks aspects of moral maturity
- stages are biased in favour f western male values
Teacher’s role
- enhance moral dev through discussions which allow learners to examine their thinking and compare it with others
- integrate reasoning into all areas of school
