Then a secondary appraisal to determine whether you have the resources to cope with the situation.
What are the 3 methods of coping?
Problem focused - where you have the resources to deal with the problem
Emotion focuses - Where you do not have the resources to deal with the problem therefore use strategies to manage the emotions associated with the problem.
Avoidance
What is the ideal mood for performance?
There is none - it depends on the characteristics of the task
Describe the iceberg profile
Typically demonstrated by elite athletes, scores on tension, depression, anger, fatigue and confusion are all low and vigour is high.
How does the everest profile differ to the iceberg profile?
Similar to ice berg except it suggest vigour is significantly higher in elite athletes.
What factors impact performance?
High vigour, low depression
What is the affect of depression on performance?
Reduces performance. With depression the facilitative effects of vigour are also reduced.
Without depression, describe how mood profiles affect athletes.
o Vigour has facilitative effects
o Fatigue and Confusion have debilitative effects (reduced performance)
o Anger and tension – inverted u – facilitative to a point then debilitative
Methods of managing tension
o Relaxation technique
o Sport related imagery
o Phsyical activity or stretching
o Precompetition routines
Methods of managing depression
o Deal with cause of pfeelings
