-2/3rds of the island was covered in ash
- 50% of the population evacuated
- the airport and port were closed
- farmland was destroyed and forest fires .
- 23 people died
- many schools and hospitals were destroyed

A
- transport remains a problem for travelling
- the tourist industry suffers with very few visitors
- over half the population left the island

- Gathering valuable possessions
- evacuation of people to Britain and Antigua
- 41 million offered to redevelop the north of the island

What caused the eruption ?
A
The atlantic plate was forced under the caribbean plate on a destructive plate boundary which then caused magma to rise in the magma chamber . The rock above the chamber allowing an eruption .
