Indian Ocean Tsunami Flashcards
What happened ?
. Shallow focus of 30km which meant that it was closer to the earths surface making rhe earthquake more dangerous.
1. The indo Austrailian plate subducted under the Eurasian plate
2. After many years of tension between the two plates the indo Austrailian plate slips and flips upwards causing the water to go 30km upward , this continues for 4 minutes
3. As the waves moved upward the water spread out into different directions , hitting 12 countries.
4. The waves are small at first becuase the water is not shallow but when it quickly reaches land , the waves pile up slowing down at the same time. This is called amplification
