Monday Lecture: Fluids and Electrolytes Flashcards
1
Q
What composition is maintenance fluid?
A
D5 1/2NS + 20 KCl
2
Q
What portion of body weight is each fluid?
A
•60% of body weight is fluid
- 1/3 of that is extracellular (1/3 of the extracellular fluid is plasma 2/3 is interstitium)
- 2/3 of that is intracellular
Example: 100 kg person • 60 kg of fluid total - 40 kg of intracellular fluid - 6.6 kg plasma - 13.4 kg interstitial fluid
3
Q
Why is albumin not given to those with burns or severe sepsis?
A
The holes in the capillaries –actually visible under a microscope –will allow the colloid to leak out and pull fluid into the interstitium.
