Molecular Orbital Theory Flashcards
Molecular orbital theory
Description of molecules and their quantum mechanical model
Describes the bonds
LCAO method
Assumes that the orbitals are wave functions
Constructive interference
Electrons of over atoms see the nucleus of the other
Crete lower energy molecules
Destructive interference
Electrons of one atoms see the electrons of another
Erase higher energy molecules (less stable)
Bonding molecular orbital
Lower in energy than original atoms
Electrons in this orbital will favor cording
Come from constructive interference
Antibonding
Higher energy than originals atoms
Will favor separated atoms, breaking molecules
Made from destructive interference
Bond order
Determines the strength of the bonds, allows us to determine if a bond is stable or not
Formula for bond order
(#e bonding -#e antibonding)/2
Positive bond order
Molecule will form
Negative or zero one order
Molecule will not form
