Chapter 4 - Types of chemical reactions Flashcards
What is a solute?
a substance in a minor quantity, changes its physical state wen dissolved
What is a solvent?
a substance in major quantity
What is an aqueous solution?
when water is used as the solvent to dissolve solutes
Why is water a good solvent ?
because ionic compounds dissociate very strongly. Solvent solute interactions are stronger than solute-solute interactions
what is a strong electrolyte?
dissociates completely in what er and good conductor
What is a weak electrolyte?
dissociates partially, poor electrical conduction
What is a non-Electrolyte?
does not dissociate, does not conduct
How can you determine the ions concentration from knowing the molarity?
write out the chemical equation of dissociation
relate molarity to the solution using stoic.
What is a precipitation reaction?
produces a solid (insoluble) compounds when two or more aqueous solution of ionic compounds are mixed
What are the rules of solubility
- Nitrate slats are soluble
- salt containing alkali metal are solubles and ammonium are soluble \
- chloride, bromide and iodide salts are soluble (exception contain ag, pb,hg)
- sulfate salts are soluble, (exceptions: baso4, pbs04, hgso4,caso4)
- hydroxide salts are not soluble (exceptions, NaOH, KOH)
- sulfide, carbonate, chromate and phosphate salts re not soluble.
