what is fear?
set of responses to perceived danger, and prepares the organism for immediate flight
what is anxiety?
sense of apprehension about impending real or imagined threat or danger, course of action is not clear
what are anxiety DISORDERS?
conditions in which fear and/or anxiety are experienced as the core of the disturbance
what is a specific phobia?
intense, persistent fear of specific objects or situations that pose little to no threat
what is alektorophobia?
the fear of chickens
what is aulophobia?
the fear of flutes
what is cathisophobia?
the fear of sitting down
define panic disorder?
a disorder in which someone gets frequent panic attacks that do not occur for a specific reason
what is a panic attack?
a discrete period of intense fear or discomfort, happens outside of actual danger
what are the symptoms of a panic attack?
palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath
what is OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)?
marked by obsessions and compulsions ( explanations in other flashcards)
what are obsessions?
urges or intrusive thoughts that the person cannot control
what are compulsions?
repetitive behaviors or acts that must be performed in response to an obsession.
what is post-traumatic stress disorder?
extreme response to a severe stressor, relating to a traumatic event that threatened or involved injury or death
what are mood disorders?
category of disorders described by discrete periods of time where behaviors are dominated by a depressed or manic mood
what is major depressive disorder?
characterized by sad mood and/or loss of interest or pleasure, for at least 2 weeks
what are some symptoms of major depressive disorder?
sleeping too much/too little, weight loss/weight gain, loss of energy
what is mania?
a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated or irritable mood, lasting at least 1 week
what are some symptoms of bipolar disorder?
unusual talkativeness, decreased need for sleep, increased distractibility
what is hypomania?
symptoms of mania, but less intense, and shorter duration
what are some differences between bipolar disorder I and II?
I- at least one manic episode, major depressive episode may be likely
II- at least one major depressive episode
what are the Criteria A symptoms of schizophrenia?
delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and behavior, negative symptoms
what are delusions?
ideas that someone believes is true but is often impossible, and highly unlikely
ex: persecutory delusions ( someone is out to get them)
what are hallucinations?
false perceptual experiences without external stimuli that would provoke those perceptions
ex: auditory hallucinations ( hearing voices)
describe disorganized speech as relating to schizophrenia.
- slipping from one topic to another with little coherence ( derailment)
- answer questions with responses that have nothing to do with the question (tangential)
- made-up words that only make sense to them ( neologisms)
- rhyming words that are injected into sentences ( clang associations)
describe Cluster A of personality disorders.
characterized by odd or eccentric behavior
ex: paranoid disorder, schiziod/schizotypal disorders
describe Cluster B of personality disorders.
dramatic, erratic, and emotional behaviors
ex: antisocial, borderline, narcissistic personality disorders
describe cluster C of personality disorders.
characterized by anxious or fearful behavior
ex: avoidant, dependent personality disorders, and OCD
describe antisocial personality disorder (ASPD or APD)
- behavior is aggressive and impulsive
- more common in men than women
- disregard for other people
describe borderline personality disorder (BPD)
- polarized thinking ( all good or all bad)
- impulsivity and instability in relationships and mood
- sensitive to emotions from others
what are some “symptoms” of BPD?
unstable sense of self, frantic efforts to avoid abandonment, poorly controlled anger
describe narcissistic personality disorder. (NPD)
- grandiose sense of self
- extremely self-centered
- lack empathy, and use people for personal gain
describe dissociative identity disorder (DID).
