Module 9 Flashcards
Name the functions of the skeletal system?
Support Protection Movement Mineral homeostasis Hematopoiesis fat (energy) storage
Support
Structural framework, attachment for tendons and ligaments
Protection
Protect internal organs
Movement
assist in movement
Mineral homeostasis
keep blood calcium and phosphate within normal limits by storing and releasing these minerals.
Fat (energy) storage
Triglycerides stored in yellow bone marrow
osteogenic cell
bone stemcell and is the precursor to other bone-cell types.
Osteoblasts
dividing cells, responsible for laying down the components of bone.
Osteocytes
within spaces of the bone. Bone cells which maintain bone integrity and bone tissue.
Osteoclast
breaks down bone (bone-chewing)
Hydroxyapatite
a compound calcium, phosphate and hydroxyl groups.
Osteogenesis imperfecta
when bone has too much mineral it becomes brittle and fractures easily. “brittle bone disease”
Rickets and Osteomalacia
Rickets in children
Osteomalacia in adults
bone has too much collagen, bones are soft and pliable.
Compact bone
hard, sense tissue provides structural support. Account for 80% of the total bone mass..Gives bone its strength.
Spongy bone
is found in the bone marrow. (long bones like femur and humerus).
Red bone marrow
Where blood cells are made
Yellow bone marrow
Storage of energy as fat
