Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)
Given to treat severe depression when other treatments are not working (depressive disorders)
A mind current is given to the patient in order to disrupt the disorder
Psychosurgery
Also called neurosurgery
During the procedure, doctors remove or destroy brain tissue
In the past, this type of psychosurgery was called a Lobotomy, which involved cutting into the prefrontal lobe to destroy brain tissue in an effort to “fix” the patient.
In the long run, more patients were harmed by lobotomies, and this procedure is no longer acceptable.
Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)
Used to treat depression
Procedure involves using a magnetic field to treat depression
Research is limited in this field.
