Module 8 Flashcards
Enacted over and over as we provoke the very behavior we accuse the other in the conflict of perpetuating. Then we each make ourselves out to be the other’s victim.
Self-fulfilling prophecies
How do to systems theory analysis
Whole system
Organization (its pieces such as coalitions and triangles)
Patterning (interaction rules and microevents)
When people are the low-power person in a conflict, the typical response is to try to form a coalition with another person to help with a third person
Conflict triangle
forms when some people are closer to each other than they are to others.
Once they form, they become self-justifying. Similarly, system isolates justify their exclusion.
Coalitions
describe the underlying communication structure of the interaction. The same people collude together, the same people are left out, and the same indirect strategies are used. No one person dictates the rules.
Interaction rules
“clusters of behaviors organized into structurally repetitive episodes.”(p. 142) For instance, a couple may have the same conflict over where to vacation each year.
Microevents
