*Positive spiritual coping is an important strategy for wellbeing and adds to the healing process and support for a healthy lifestyle
Common themes in spirituality
Meaning, Purpose, Connectedness, relationship, transcendence, healing and intuitive sense
What is religion
an organized system of beliefs concerning the cause, nature and purpose of our universe.
Especially w/ belief/worship of a god
spirituality is an inherent part of religion
Faith
Used in 2 ways:
1) As a cultural or institutional religion (christianity, judaism)
2) or a relationship with a divinity, high power authority or spirit
* May also involve transcendence
Transcendence
Isn’t necessarily in relation to a god. IT is an awareness of something that a person cannot see or know in an ordinary physical way, experience of fullness beyond daily life
What is agnostic
They believe that the ultimate reality is unknown and cannot be know
How do children react to spirituality
Usually they will base their ideas on what is presented to them
How do adolensence react to spirituality
They may question their prior beliefs
When do adults experience spiritual growth
When the enter into long term relationships. The ability to care for others and self, is evidence of healthy spirituality
Tips for reaching out to someone about their spirituality
- Look for cues that spirituality is important
- Build relationships of trust
- May feel out of comfort zone
- Time and climate of privacy for convo fosters the expression of concern
- attentive engagement
- don’t wanna harm individuals spirit
- quiet convo, effective listening, communication through presence and touch

What is compassion
A virtuous response that seeks to address the suffering and needs of a person through relational understanding and action
What does FICA stand for

- Does spirituality influence decision making for you?
- C-Community*
- are you a part of a spiritual community, is this a support for you?
- A-Adress in care*
- How would you like me to dress these issues in your care?
- invite pt. to share their spiritual belief and view with you

- open an opportunity for compassionate care
