What is substance abuse?
Using without a reason, any psychoactive or mood altering drug, including alcohol, in such a manner as to induce impairment resulting in dysfunctional social behavior.
What are the three areas of substance misuse in the maltreatment index?
- The caregiver inappropriately using drugs or alcohol
- A child inappropriately consuming or being given drugs or alcohol
- Poisoning due to caregiver actions or neglect
What is addiction?
A disease with its own psychopathology characterized by compulsion, loss of control, and continued use in spite of adverse consequences
How is maltreatment related to substance abuse?
- Might lead to physical, emotional and sexual abuse.
- Might lead to parent to lack supervision
- Leads to neglect
- Selling drugs is threatened harm
- Involving the children in criminal activity which is endangerment
What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can have serious birth defects such as:
- Growth deficiencies
- Central nervous system functioning
- Mild to severe IQ
- Poor development in optic nerve
- Small head and brain
- Malformations in joints, limbs, ears and heart
