What is abusive head trauma?
Often fatal injuries caused by violent shaking of a very young child
What are the 3 main signs of of head trauma?
- Subdural hematoma
- Retinal hemorrhage
- Metaphyseal lesions
What are the most life threatening physical abuse?
- Head Injuries
- Battered Child Syndrome
- Internal Injuries
- Burns
- Weapon Injury
- Poisoning
What is Battered Child Syndrome
Child 3 and under that has multiple marks and bruises in different stages of healing (chronically physical abuse)
Soft tissue injuries are usually indicative of abuse
Injuries at
- Abdomen
- Chest
- Butt
- Inner tight
- Tricep
- Sides of body
Bilateral injuries are indicative of abuse
Same injury on both sides such as stocking burns
What is the Child Protection Team
Team that helps child welfare professionals in their work with families in cases of child abuse and neglect
