module 6- variation and inheritance Flashcards
What is discrete variation?
A characteristic which can be used to divide a population into two or more distinct groups
What is heterozygous?
It is an organism which contains two different alleles of the same gene
What is polygenic inheritance?
It is a characteristic controlled by more than one type of gene
What is homozygous?
It is an organism which contains identical alleles for a particular gene
What is continuous variation?
A characteristic which varies in a species in a continuous manner from one extreme to another showing a range of values
What are alleles?
They are different forms of the same gene
What is a monohybrid cross?
It is a cross involving the alleles of a single gene
What is dominant?
It is the alleles that always show their effect and mask the presence of the other form of gene
What is recessive?
It is the type of allele that is masked by the dominant form of the gene
What are the different generations in a monohybrid cross?
P1, F1, F2
What is a predicted ratio?
It is the expected number of each type of offspring as worked out in the punnet square
What is a genotype?
It is the alleles present for a particular gene
What is a phenotype?
The physical appearance resulting from a particular genotype
What are some examples of continuous variation?
-hand span,
-height,
-weight,
-shoe size,
What are some examples of discrete variation?
-wavy hair vs straight hair,
-green eyes vs blue eyes,
-tongue rolling,
-hair colour,
