Module 6 - Body Structures and Organ Systems Flashcards
Structure of organ systems smallest to largest
Cell -> tissue -> organ -> organ system
Superior
AKA cranial. Above or closer to the head
Inferior
AKA caudal. Below or closer to the feet
Anterior
AKA ventral. Toward the front of the body
Posterior
AKA dorsal. Toward the back of the body
Medial
Closer to the midline of the body.
Lateral
Further from the midline of the body
Proximal
Closer to the trunk of the body
Distal
Farther away from the trunk
Superficial
Closer to the surface of the body
Deep
Farther from the body’s surface
Sagittal plane, midsagittal
Divides the body into left and right sides. Midsagittal refers to an equal division of left and right sides
Transverse plane
Divides the body into upper and lower sections, not necessarily equally
Frontal plane
AKA coronal plane, divides the body into anterior and posterio sections
Five cavities of the body
Cranial, spinal, thoracic, abdominal, pelvic
Cranial cavity
Within the body cranium, houses the meninges (brain)
Spinal cavity
A continuation of the cranial cavity as it travels down the midline of the back
Thoracic cavity
Within the chest, houses the lungs, heart, and major vessels
Abdominal cavity
Within the abdomen, houses several major organs
Pelvic cavity
Inferior to the abdominal cavity, houses the bladder
Four body quadrants
Divide the abdomen section below the rib cage.
Useful for documenting chief complaint.
Nine body regions
Divide the abdomen section below the chest.
