Abbreviation of the chemical name
What is the trade name/brand name?
The name assigned to the drug by the manufacturer/drug company

What is drug abuse?
Inappropriate use of prescription drugs in a way not intended to be used (either continually or periodically ex. alcohol)
What is drug misuse?
A pattern of using any drug in such a way that it negatively affects a person’s psychological and physiological well-being
(Improper use of common medication in ways that lead to acute and chronic toxicity ex. Laxative to lose weight)
What is drug tolerance?
When someone requires a greater dosage to achieve the same therapeutic affect
What is drug dependence?
When someone requires a drug to maintain a state of physiological or physical well-being
The greatest risk of tolerance and dependence are with
CNS stimulating or depressing drugs

Contrast Psychological Vs physical dependency
Psychological - If the act of taking a medication, not the medication itself, produces the effect
Physical - Negative – occurs when there is obvious sign of physiological distress when the medication is withheld
