What are schedule 1 medications?
Requires a prescription and provided by pharmacist. Include the following:
all prescription drugs, drugs with potential for abuse, controlled drugs, narcotic drugs
example: Morphine
What are schedule 2 medications?
Behind the counter – consultation required from pharmacist example - Ephedrine
What are scheduled 3 medications?
Behind the counter - no consultation or invention required from pharmacist
What are unscheduled drugs?
Can be sold in any store without professional supervision
Who is the regulatory agency responsible for ensuring that drugs are safe and effective?
Therapeutic Products Directorate of the Health Products and Food Branch of Health Canada
What is pharmacotherapy?
Application of drugs to prevent disease and ease suffering
Substances applied for therapeutic purposes fall into one of three general categories. what are they?
Drugs are medications, Biologics, natural health products
What are biologics?
Agents naturally produced in animal cells, by micro organisms, or by the body itself
What is minimum effective concentration?
Time it takes for and accumulated concentration of the drug to become minimally effective
What is therapeutic range (duration of action)?
Concentration of the drug that is needed to produce a therapeutic response; Describes when the therapeutic response begins, peaks, and remains therapeutic
What is toxic concentration?
Level at which the drug concentration exceeds the therapeutic range and result in serious adverse effects
What is a loading dose?
A high dosage of the medication administered to a client in order to achieve a quick therapeutic response
What is maintenance dose?
A dosage administered to keep a preferred plasma drug concentration in the blood
What information should the practical nurse research before administering a drug?
Contraindications, indications, drug to drug interaction, expiry date, dose, safe range (especially in pediatrics) adverse and side effects
What are category X drugs?
They are teratogenetic (halt pregnancy, birth defect), contraindicated
