Module 3 Flashcards
When do we use the 9-GAMUT series?
- When the SUD is higher than 7.
2. When after several rounds the SUD is not or hardly decreasing.
What are the 9 steps in the 9-GAMUT series?
- Eyes closed
- Eyes open
- Eyes hard down right
- Eyes hard down left
- Roll eyes in circle
- Roll eyes in other direction
- Hum 2 seconds of a song
- Count to 5
- Hum 2 seconds of a song
What is the point of using language during EFT? When is it not needed?
The point is to keep the patient focused on the targeted emotion or physical sensation. When someone is experiencing a lot of emotions, the language is not needed. Ask them to keep their eyes open to prevent dissociation.
Why don’t we tap the ring finger?
The meridian on the ring finger is on the other side of the finger in comparison with the other fingers. To prevent confusion the top of the hand is used for that meridian.
Does the sequence matter?
No, it does not, nor does the starting point.
What are the two parts of the setup statement?
- A statement of the negative condition to acknowledge the present state.
- is a self-affirming statement of acceptance.
What can be included in the first part of the setup statement?
Use the language and the words as described by the patient, don’t change their language!
- Details of the moment (What’s happening at that point in the story?)
- Somatic sensations (Where & how in the body is the emotion being felt?)
- Name of the emotion being experienced NOW
- SUDS level
What are your options for when a patient cannot utter the second part of the setup statement?
- “I am working on accepting myself”
- “I hope to, one day, accept myself, deeply and completely”
- “I am willing to learn to love and accept myself.”
The clinician and patient can work to co-create a completion phrase for the Setup Statement that resonates for the patient.
How many rounds of tapping do you do before checking the SUDS again and what do you do then?
You do 2-3 rounds of tapping before asking the SUD. After that you create a new setup statement using the new information that came up.
Why do we focus on the negative?
It helps the patient focus on the emotions that are there and that are associated with the event.
The energetic disruption that results in the
present-day emotional upset was caused by a “negative” emotion in the past. By focusing on that present-day emotional upset, we allow for the manifestation of that emotion to be expressed and addressed. By clearing the present-day manifestation of emotional upset that results from the energetic disruption, we allow for the positive, that is already assumed to be present, to shine through. Remember the completion phrase of the Setup Statement, “I accept myself deeply & completely.” This is saying that we are whole and complete as we are, let’s remove the obstacles (energetic disruptions) to the experience of that wholeness.
Gary Craig, the creator of EFT, had this to say regarding this topic (paraphrasing), “The sky is as blue as it can be, we don’t have to add more blue to it. What we need to do to appreciate the blue is to remove the clouds.” EFT allows us to remove the obstacles (energetic disruptions) to appreciating our wholeness.
What do you use as reminder statements?
You use the input from the client. Use the words they put in the setup statement as well. Best not be too creative here, since you might trigger other memories.
The emotions we tap on are those as experienced in the…
…now. We focus on the emotions and sensations that are being experienced in the present moment rather than a remembered emotion or sensation.
How do we modify the setup statement for subsequent rounds?
Modify your language to reflect the changes taking place and the decrease in intensity. Example:
“Even though I still feel some sense of embarrassment, that now feels like a 2…”
A new Reminder Phrase to include might be, “This remaining embarrassment”
You can also ask your client what is left or if something new came up.
How to tap the karate chop point?
Spread the fingers of the hand you’re tapping with so that the pinky is on the wrist line and the index finger is on the pinky line. It is the small intestine point you’re hitting here.
How hard should you tap?
In the middle of firm and not firm enough.
