Define Resilience
resilience is used to explain the ability to cope with life events (positive & negative) and to grow from the experience in most cases.
Define recovery
recovery is about well-being & quality of life, the focus on positive engagement and activities.
The recovery process happens outside of treatment services and is a personal ongoing journey.
Common characteristics include:
- Connectedness
- Hope
- Identity
- Meaning
- Empowerment
Define reconnection
through the support of the nurse (health care) the patient can reconnect with family, friends, and community.
Define risk factors
Risk factors: increase vulnerability to mental illness and mitigate against recovery
Define protective factors
Protective factors: assist the person to maintain emotional and social well-being, and to cope with life experiences - including adversity.
Therapeutic optimism
refers to the clinicians expectation of a positive outcome for the consumer.
*Self-efficacy, hope, and belief in the consumer’s capacity to recover from illness, set realistic goals, and overcome obstacles.
Principles of recovery-orientated MH practice
1) Uniqueness of the individual: opportunities for choice and living a meaningful, satisfying life
2) Real choices: Empowers own choices on how lives are lead. Build strengths, takes responsibility for own life.
3) Attitudes and Rights: Listening, learning from, acting upon communications from individuals and carers. Human rights.
4) Dignity and Respect: Courteous, respectful, honest in all interactions. Sensitivity and respect for each individual. Challenges stigma and discrimination.
5) Partnership and Communication: Each individual is an expert on their own life. Work in positive and realistic ways with the patient to encourage their hopes, and goals.
6) Evaluating recovery: Ongoing evaluation, track own progress, involve and inform quality improvement activities with MH services.
