Describe the stress-vulnerability model.
Useful model for identifying and treating relapses of mental illness.
- 2 main areas : biological vulnerability and stress; influenced by several other factors that people have some control over.
- alcohol & drug use
- medication use
- coping skills
- social support
- meaningful activities
By addressing these factors, people can reduce symptoms and relapses and well as improving the course of their recovery.
Identify the importance of physical health assessments and related interviews for people diagnosed with mental illness.
Physical illness occurs in approximately 45% of psychiatric outpatients, and whilst assessments are relatively common many ailments go undiscovered, leading to lower quality of life, decreased functionality, and increased risk of early death.
Individuals with severe mental illness die earlier than the general population because of poor health behaviours, medication side effects, inadequate preventive care, and insufficient medical care.
Primary care such as assessments and interviews can identify the individual’s need and communicate with the multi-team to incorporate speciality areas, such as social workers, home-care to help support co-morbid conditions.
Distinguish factors that affect the physical health of People with mental illness.
Co-morbid conditions:
obesity, poor nutrition, poor oral health, smoking.
Complications of disease:
Diabetes, respiratory problems, infection, cancer, cardiovascular disease,stroke, sexual health
High-risk behaviours:
Smoking, alcohol and other substances, sexual relationships.
Identify the nurse’s skill set (knowledge & skills) required to undertake physical and mental health interventions in all care contexts.
Basic vital monitoring:
- routine physical observations
- general & pathological investigations
Drug & Alcohol assessments:
* samples/ screening/ referral to services
Exercise & lifestyle factors:
- introduce physical health interventions
- health education behaviours (nutrition, reduction smoking, alcohol misuse)
