Expectancy Value Theory
Idea that student expectation and idea of value effect motivation.
Avoidance Goal
Student purposely avoids goal for fear of looking unintelligent. (Avoiding Negative)
Approach Goal
Student wanting to lear to better self or best-others
Value
Reason Student takes task (how can I benefit?)
Expectancy
Student’s expectation for success. (can I do this?)
Mastery-Approach
Improving self knowledge even if will fail.
Performance-Aproach
Demonstrating ability/ outperforming others.
Mastery-Avoidance
Never mastering due to self standards.
Performance-Avodience
Motivated to avoid looking incompetent compared to others.
Incremental View of Ability
Looking at achievement or failure as a reflection of ability.

Entity View of Ability
Regarding ability as stable and fixed. (Entity, Everything)
To Gender Diff.
Boys: + belief Science Math & Sports
Girls: + belief Music, Reading, & Lang Arts
Girls more often attribute failure of math & science to ability. Boys have higher internal attributions.
Race Diff.
Asians: Culture of malleable ability and importance of bettering self= + motivation
Latin/Black: Reject achievement related values.
Increase Motivation:
Short Term Goals -> big goal(s) Less-Competative atmosphere Evaluation & recognition Promote Intrinsic Motivation Change Attribution
