Module 2 studyset Flashcards
what is the most commonly used ethernet cable in business in home networks
Twisted pair ethernet cable
how is an internet connection to a building or home normally delivered
through a coaxial cable and/or fiberoptic cable from an internet service provider
what does a modem do, a gateway modem inside a building or home.
it passes the internet connection through a twisted pair ethernet cabled to a router or single computer
what does a router do
it uses ethernet cables to distribute wire network connections
what are network cables also called?
CAt cables
What would provide a wireless connection to an internal network?
router
what technology can also supply telephone and television services to businesses and homes
ethernet over twisted pair
what does twisted pair ethernet cable use?
four pairs of color coated copper wires. each colored pair, one solid and one striped, twisted together.
what are the three main categories of ethernet cables available on the market?
unshielded twisted pair, UTP,
shielded twisted pair, STP
toiled twisted pair, FTP
unshielded twisted pair
the most common and least expensive type of ethernet cable. found in business and home networks. basic protection against emi, rfi, crosstalk
shielded twisted pair
used were emi, rfi, and crosstalk with nearby cables have been identified as a problem. use braided aluminum shielding to incase the four twisted pears under the outer jacket
foiled twisted pair
used where emi, rfi, and crosstalk are problem. use a thin foil shield the wraps around the bundle of twisted pear wires underneath the outer jacket.
what can exist together in the same cable for extra protection against interference
shielded twisted par and foiled twisted par
what is the most expensive of the ethernet cable options?
manufacturing cables to have braided and/or foil shields around each of the four twisted pairs.
Sf/FTP use case
industrial environment where emi and rfi are higher than normal.
straight through cable( patch cable)
primary type of ethernet cable used in computer networks. normally it connects computers and routers to hubs and ethernet switches. can also connect servers to ethernet switches.
straight through cable identification
compare both ends of the cable with one another. if the color and stripe order of the twisted pears are in the same position on both ends of the cable, it is a straight through cable.
in position of straight through cables
orange stripe wire that appears in pin position one will appear in pin position one at the other end. the same goes for all other wires
what cable standards do not use blue and browned cables
100BaseT-standards, common for home networks. `
etc networks have the option to use blue and brown cables?
networks using gigabit ethernet for Power over Ethernet.
Power over ethernet
a technique for delivering DC power to devices over copper ethernet cabling, eliminating the need for separate power supplies and outlets.
What is 100Base-T
the IEEE standard that defines the requirement for sending information at 100 Mbps on unshielded twisted-pair cabling,
Straight Through cable key:
Computers and routers use:
Pins 1 & 2 - Orange wires for sending data
Pins 3 & 6 - Green wires for receiving data
Hubs and switches use:
Pins 1 & 2 - Green wires for sending data
Pins 3 & 6 - Orange wires for receiving data
Crossover cables
used to connect two computing devices directly to one another.
Enterprise network
the it infrastructure that midsize and large organizations used to provide connectivity among users devices and applications
What can most new enterprise devices do?
detect ethernet connection types and select the correct wires for sending and receiving data using auto medium dependent interface crossover technology.
Auto medium dependent interface crossover, Auto-MDI/MDIX ports
they replace the crossover cable function for connecting two devices they use the same sending and receiving wires for data communications
what are examples of an enterprise machine
server, switch, router, hub
what is a crossover cable connection normally used for
update, repair, perform admin tasks on the enterprise machin
where should a crossover cable be connected?
between the ethernet port/ network interface card (NIC) on the it administrative system in the management part of the enterprise machine.
What does it crossover cable connection do?
access is the operating system and/or management interface of an enterprise machine, connects to switches, two hubs, a switch to a hub, to routers, two PC, or router to a pc.
crossover cables key for a T-568-A
Crossover cable key:
Endpoint 1 of the Ethernet cable:
Pins 1 & 2 - Green wires for sending data
Pins 3 & 6 - Orange wires for receiving data
Endpoint 2 of the Ethernet cable:
Pins 1 & 2 - Orange wires for sending data
Pins 3 & 6 - Green wires for receiving data
T-568-B scheme
if you see orange wires start at pin positions 3 and 6, they should cross over to pin positions 1 and 2 at the opposite end of the cable. Green wires should start at pin positions 1 and 2, crossing over to 3 and 6 at the opposite end. This wiring crossover is needed to connect two computers that transmit and receive data on the same wires. Blue and brown wires do not cross over to different positions in this set-up.
Straight-through cables use the T568B wiring scheme, while crossover cables use
both schemes.
The most common plug that terminates twisted pair network cables
RJ45, register jack 45.
what is the purpose of switches
to connect many network devices
how many network ports do servers and desktops usually have
one or two
what do most network ports have?
a link light and an activity light
when is a link light lit
when a cable is properly connected to two devices that are both powered on
when does an activity light flash
when data is transmitted across a cable
what should I know about port lights
there’s almost always troubleshooting data available through them
how reports connected to the network
usually through cables run through the walls that ended a patch panel
what is the patch panel
a device containing many network ports. a container for the endpoints of runs of cable.
where do cables go that are run from a patch panel
to switches a routers to provide network access to the computers at the other end of the patch panel links.
What is a crimper
a handheld tool that looks like a set of pliers. you use it to squeeze or crimp wires To connect them
what is a cable stripper
a hand held the vote that removes the protective rubber coating from cables.
what is a wifi analyzer
a scanner then analyzes the power and quality of the wifi in an area, collect data about the wifi and its circumstances. Inspect power and wifi quality
what is a toner probe
part of a settled device is used to find the ethernet and other internet connectors. one device plugs into a cable while the other device uses a tone which gets louder as it gets closer to the device plugged into the cable
what is a punch down tool (krone tool)
a tool used to punch down wires into panels or jacks. first the protective covering is taken off the wires, then the wires are punched in place
what is a cable tester
a device that digitally measures integrity of a cable for compliance with developed cabling standards.
what does a cable tester measure
attenuation
impedance
noise
near end crosstalk
attenuation to crosstalk ratio (ACR)
powerSum NEXT
It measures integrity for standards compliance
Attenuation
The loss of communication signal strength that is measured in decibels
Impedance
the effective resistance of an electric current or component to alternating current, arising from the combined effects of ohmic resistance and reactance
Noise as detected by a cable tester
voltage, current spikes, random noise, crosstalk
Near end crosstalk (next)
Measures the signal coupled from one pair of wires to another. refers to the ability of twisted wire cabling to reject crosstalk. Measures crosstalk pairs of wire at the near end of the circuits, link, or channel where the signal is sourced
ACR, Attenuation to crosstalk ratio
a parameter measured when testing a communication link, which represents the overall performance of the cable. a mathematical formula that calculates the ratio of attenuation to near end crosstalk for each combination of cable pairs
PSNEXT, PowerSum NEXT
This measures the total crosstalk between one wire pair and all its neighbors
Loopback plug
a device that tests ports. wires are connected in a loop that sends traffic back to the port after it receives it
network tap
a device that copies traffic information for use in monitoring devices. an external device.
