Cable broadband Flashcards
trend of networking technology
moving towards wireless connection
Trend of Television technology
leaning towards cabling. became the size of the public telephone system in the 90’s, and infrastructure grew.
Coaxial cables could, as cable companies discovered
transmit far more data than was required for TV viewing.
how did cable based internet access technoligies deliver high speed internet access?
using frequencies that don’t interfere with television broadcast. This is cable broadband.
cable broadband definition
using frequencies that don’t interfere with tv broadcast to transmit data.
difference between cable and other broadband
cable is generally a shared bandwidth technology.
shared bandwidth
Many users share certain amounts of bandwidth until the transmissions reach the internet service provider’s core network. anywhere from a single city blocked to entire subdivisions. depending on how the area was wired for cable.
Where does the connection ffrom your home or business go in DSL or dial up connections?
a central office, or CO. Used to be offices staffed with telephone operators who used a switchboard to manually connect callers. Became small pieces of hardware that automatically handled these functions.
TEchnology that connects directly to a CO:
can guarantee a certain amoutn of bandwidth over that connection since it is point to point.
what have most cable operators tried to do to their networks so end users don’t always notice the shared bandwidth? is it successful?
UPgrade them. it is still common to see cable internet connections slow down during periods of heavy use, especially when lots of people in the same region are using their internet connection at the same time.
what are cable internet connections usually managed by
a cable modem
cable modem
a device that sits at the edge of a consumers network and connects it to the cable modem termination system
CMTS cable modem termination system
what connects lots of different cable connections to an internet service providers core network
