How many registrars are there now
hundreds all over the world
How does one register a domain name these days
create an account with the registrar, use their web ui to search a domain name to determine if it is still available, agree upon a price to pay in the length of your registration, and then once you own the domain name you can either have the registrars name servers act as the authoritative name servers for the domain, or you can configure your own servers to be authoritative
the recipient registrar will generate a unique string of characters to prove you own the domain and that you are allowed to transfer it to someone else, I’d configure my DNS settings to contain this string in a specific record, then once this information has propagated it can be confirmed that we both own the domain and approve its transfer. then the ownership would move to the new owner or registrar
how can domain names be transferred by one party to another and from one registrar to another
how long does domain name registration typically last
a few years that you pay for
what happens when my domain names expire?
