Module 2: Study designs Flashcards
Data collection: qualitative
interviews, focus groups
Data collection: quantitative
surveys, experiments
Which type of study has more control over thee variables?
Experimental- control/manipulate variables
-help understand relationship between variables
-potential cause:effect relationships
What are observational studies good for?
-observe/measure natural variability, attributes, traits w/out direct manipulation
Which study is “the gold standard” for determining the effectiveness of interventions
Randomized control trials (RCT)
-incorporate randomness in selection of subjects
-blind researchers/participants
What does randomness increase?
Generalizability (making predictions based on observations)
What does randomness in sampling increase?
Applicability (extent to which results will affect common practice)
Limitation: correlational study
-correlation does not imply causation
Limitation: pre-experimental study
-explore relationships btwn variables
-lack control group
Limitation: quasi-experimental study
-potential selection biases
Limitation: RCT
-sample size
-abstraction from reality (lab environment/not)
-level of blinding imposed
