Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS 2)
-provides guidelines for ethical research involving humans in Canada
What are the three core principles of TCPS 2
1) respect for persons
2) concern for welfare
3) justice
Respect for persons
-recognize inherent dignity and worth of all individuals
-respect autonomy (right to make their own choices)
-protect those w/ diminished autonomy
Concern for welfare
-protecting the wellbeing of participants
-minimizing risk
-maximizing benefits
Justice
-ensuring fairness and equity in the distribution of benefits and burdens of research
Privacy
-individual’s right to control access to their personal information
-free from intrusion
Confidentiality
-researcher’s obligation to protect information provided by participants
Informed consent involves:
1) clear/comprehensive info of study (purpose, procedure, risks, benefits)
2) ensure participants understand info and can make a voluntary decision to participate
3) obtaining written documentation of consent
