Module 2: Interpreting Results (mixed methods) Flashcards
Descriptive studies
-describe characteristics of a population/phenomena being studied
Analytical studies
-identify the relationships btwn phenomena
Basic research
expand knowledge and understanding (w/out practical understanding)
Applied research
to solve practical problems
What are review papers?
-summarize the findings of other published articles
-usually done by someone of known/established expertise
What are systematic reviews?
-complete, exhausted summary of current literature relevant to a research question
How are systematic reviews completed?
-collect secondary data, critically appraise research studies, synthesize findings qualitatively/quantitatively
Key characteristics of systematic reviews
-clearly stated set of objectives
-explicit, reproducible methodology
-systematic search (eligibility)
-assessment of validity of findings (assess bias)
-systematic presentation
What is a meta-analysis
-use of statistical methods to summarize the results on individual studies
What is a practical application of a meta-analysis?
-more precise estimates of health care than those derived from individual studies
Attributes of a meta-analysis
-type of systematic review
-quantitative
-formal
-epidemiological study design (studies of health, disease, incidence, practice)
