Module 2: Basics of Health Behavior Change Flashcards
The Health Belief Model
- Focuses on patient’s perceptions & beliefs about their health
- Changes perceptions & beliefs about health and suggested action to influence a change
The Theory of Planned Behavior
- It’s used to correct the person’s beliefs and attitude toward a behavior
- Takes into consideration behavioral belief & subjective norms (what people around them/who they admire are doing)
- Perceived behavioral control
- Ex: Someone who smokes & feels they can’t quit because their friends smoke when they hang out - help them find a way around their barriers
The Transtheoretical Model of Change
- Stages of change*
- Used to evaluate how they feel about their health & their readiness to change
- Motivational interviewing is often used to guide them through the stages of change
Precontemplation
Person is unaware or doesn’t recognize the need for change
Perceived Susceptibility
Their belief of the likelihood of getting the condition
Perceived Severity
Their view of how severely they would be impacted if they had the condition
Perceived Threat
Combination of perceived susceptibility and perceived severity
Perceived Barriers
Their perception of difficulties they might have when taking the suggested action
Perceived Benefits
Their belief in how effective the action will be to mitigate the problem, considering the severity
Self-efficacy
Their confidence & belief in their ability to take the suggested action
Ambivalence
- Having mixed feelings or opposing feelings about changing behavior
- An indecisive state of being
- Stage of Change: Contemplation
Behavioral Intention
- What they plan to do about behavior (if they will change)
- This comes from their behavioral beliefs and subjective norms
Describe patient self-management
- Practitioners are the experts in the condition, patients are the experts on their lives
- Allows patient to identify their problems and how to solve them
- Practitioner & Patient work together to create an action plan
Contemplation
- Person recognizes a need for change but hasn’t made specific plans to change
- Ambivalence
Maintenance
Person has been practicing the change consistently for 6 months
