Q

Describe and discuss appropriates strategies for working with a talkative client.

A
  • Reflective listening and summaries: rephrase what they said about the change talk, not the tangent
  • Refocusing: if they start getting off topic or alternating between topics, we can ask which topic they want to discuss first – this will get them to choose one to focus on
  • Breaking in with kindness and compassion: we can say “If I may jump in for just a moment, I’m concerned we’re not going to be able to discuss the reason your doctor sent you to see me. Unfortunately, we only have about 10 minutes today and I want to make sure I have time to answer any questions you might have.”
