Module 176: Terrestrial Biomes Flashcards
What are two major Abiotic factors?
Temperature & Precipitation
What are Biomes?
Large geographic area with a characteristics collection of plants and animals.
Terrestrial biomes exist where?
They exist on dry land
What determines the biome?
Climate and geography
What happens in a deciduous forest?
The trees shed leaves in fall
Forest Biomes cover how much space?
Over 1/3 of the planet’s land
Forest Biomes have 4 major types which are?
Tropical Rainforest, Taiga, Temperate Rainforest & Chaparral
What is a nickname for Forest?
“Carbon sinks”
Forest Biomes divide into what 3 layers?
- Canopy-treetops; a lot of light is absorbed here
- Understory-shrubs and younger trees; unevenly spaced
- Forest floor- small plants and decomposing biomass
Tropical Rainforest characteristics?
- 50-400 inches of rain per yr.
- Covers 6% of planet’s surface and home of 50% of Eukaryotic species
- Average 20-34 C.
Temperate Forest characteristics?
- Has 4 seasons
- 29-59 inches of precipitation per year
- Much more light penetrates canopy
Chaparral characteristics?
- Warm and dry climate
- Trees tend to be short and spread out
- Thick, tough leaves are common
- Many nocturnal animals
Taiga (Boreal Forest) Characteristics?
- Cold (-54 to 30 C.)
- 10-40 inches of rain
- Dense, uniform canopy consisting of evergreens.
Grassland Biomes characteristics?
- Very complex with low-growing flowering plants
2. Shrubs and trees may be present, but low precipitation makes it difficult to support large numbers.
There are two forms of grassland biomes what are they?
Temperate Grasslands & Savanna
