what does
CSMA/CA
stand for
this stands for
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance
in 6 steps describe how
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA)
works
- the source device sends a request to send (RTS) message to the access point
- if the channel is not being used then the AP sends the source device a clear to send (CTS) message.
- a CTS message is then broadcast to all the other devices so they know the channel is in use
- when the source device has finished sending its messages it sends an acknowledgement message to the AP. this ACK message tells the AP that the channel can be freed
- the AP then broadcasts an ACK message to all other hosts on the WLAN letting them know the channel will be freed
- the AP then frees the channel
