Module 1 (LAB): Anatomical Language | Skeletal Tissue | Axial Skeleton Flashcards
Axial Skeleton
- protects internal organs
- cranium, vertebral column, ribs, sternum
Appendicular Skeleton
- forms framework of the limbs
- upper limb, lower limb, pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle
Osteogenic Cells
primordial bone cells that divide and become osteoblasts
Osteoblasts
bone producing cells that secrete collagen and form extracellular matrix
Osteocytes
maintain bone metabolic needs and form gap junctions between neighboring cells, found in mature bone
Osteoclasts
bone resorption for maintenance and repair
Perichondrium
connective tissue that covers the surface of cartilage
Chondrocytes
cells responsible for cartilage formation
Hyaline Cartilage
- collagen fibers, gel-like matrix
- perichondrium
- low strength
- surfaces of joints, larynx, trachea
Fibrocartilage
- thick bundles of collagen
- chondrocytes
- high strength
- intervertebral discs
Elastic Cartilage
- elastic and collagen fibers
- chondrocytes and perichondrium
- intermediate strength
- auricle of ear, epiglottis
Long Bones
longer than they are wide
Endochondral Ossification
process by which growing cartilage is systematically replaced by bone to form growing skeleton
chondroblasts lay down cartilage and gets ossified by calcium
Epiphysis
articular heads, ends
Diaphysis
primary ossification center, hollow, tubular shaft
