Mod 5 Lesson 1 Flashcards
Electromagnetic radiation:
Electromagnetic radiation: energy that travels in waves from a single source and includes all of the types of energy on the electromagnetic spectrum
Electromagnetic spectrum:
Electromagnetic spectrum: the collection of all known frequencies and wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation
Frequency
Frequency: the number of waves that pass a given point in a given amount of time, usually one second
Radiation
Radiation: method of heat transfer in which waves travel outward from a central source
Visible light
Visible light: a form of electromagnetic radiation that is visible to the human eye and is made up of all of the colors of the rainbow
Wavelength:
Wavelength: the distance from one point on a wave to the same point on the next wave
The longer the wavelength, the lower the total energy of the wave.
True or False?
True
The faster the frequency, the lower the total amount of energy of the wave.
True or False?
False
Shorter Wavelength + Higher Frequency = Higher Energy
True or False?
True
Longer Wavelength + Lower Frequency = _____ Energy
Lower or higher?
Lower
The _______________ spectrum that includes the seven types of __________ energy (radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, visible light, ultraviolet waves, X-rays, and gamma waves.)
Electromagnetic, Electromagnetic
Radio waves
Radio waves are used for communication applications in television, radar, and mobile phones. They have the longest wavelength and the lowest energy.
Microwaves
Microwaves are used for satellite signals and cooking.
Infrared waves
Infrared waves are used for remote controls, toasters, and night vision cameras.
Visible light
Visible light is the only part of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see with their naked eye. These waves allow us to see color.
