Mod 4 Lesson 1 Flashcards
What is Debris?
pieces of bone, shell, or other nonrock material
What is Extrusive igneous rock?
lava cooling and solidifying into rock outside of Earth’s surface
What is Igneous rock?
rock formed from the cooling of magma (intrusive igneous) or lava (extrusive igneous)
Intrusive igneous rock: magma cooling and solidifying into rock inside of Earth’s surface
What is Lava?
molten rock outside Earth from a volcanic eruption
What is the Rock Cycle?
changes that rocks undergo over time from one form to another
What is Sedimentary rock?
rock formed from the compaction and cementation of sediment and debris over time
Sediment: small particles of sand, pebbles, and other types of rock
What is Metamorphic rock?
formed when rock is exposed to intense heat and pressure over time
What are Minerals?
naturally occurring, nonliving materials including gold, silver, copper, and quartz
What is Magma?
molten rock deep within the Earth
What are the three types of rock?
Sedimentary rock
Metamorphic rock
Igneous rock
Lava cooling outside of Earth creates
extrusive igneous rock.
Magma cooling inside Earth creates
intrusive igneous rock.
Example of Sedimentary rock
limestone, shale, and sandstone
Example of Metamorphic rock
marble, gneiss, and slate
Example of Igneous rock
granite, basalt, and pumice
All rocks change slowly from one type to another again and again.
True or False
True
sediment rock pushed deeper under Earth and melted becomes what?
molten magma
molten magma erupts as lava, cools down and forms into what?
igneous rock
igneous rock that is pushed into Earth and exposed to pressure and heat becomes what?
metamorphic rock!
igneous rock that is Uplifted and exposed to weathering, erosion, and deposition becomes what?
rock sediments
molten magma that has cooled inside the earth becomes what?
igneous rock!
As sediment rock pushed under the earth and exposed to intense heat and pressure becomes what?
metamorphic rock!
As metamorphic rock gets pushed deeper into the earth and melts it becomes what?
molten magma
As metamorphic rock gets pushed to the exterior of the earth through tectonic plate movement and exposed to weathering, erosion, and deposition
sedimentary rock.
