Mod 4 lesson 4 Flashcards
Biomass?
: organic matter that can be used as a fuel source
Nonrenewable resource?
: a natural resource that is in limited supply and/or takes more than a lifetime to replenish
Global effect?
: general practices carried out by many that affect a very large area and/or number of people
Local effect: the actions of a few individuals that affect a small area and/or a smaller number of people
Urbanization?
: the process of clearing natural vegetation and replacing it with concrete and buildings
Geothermal energy?
: renewable energy captured through using the heat of the Earth
Desertification?
: the process that causes fertile land to become desert-like
Renewable resource?
: a natural resource that is replaceable through a cycle in nature or sustainable practice in one lifetime
Fossil fuel?
: a nonrenewable fuel such as coal, oil, or gas created from the remains of living organisms
Recyclable
existing materials that can be re-purposed to make new products
Deforestation?
the permanent destruction and clearing of forests and plant life in an area
Examples of Renewable Resources?
Examples: sunlight, wind, water, trees/plants,
geothermal energy, biomass
Examples of Nonrenewable resources?
Examples: fossil fuels, glass, metals, rocks/minerals
Examples of recyclable material?
may include renewable and nonrenewable resources such as aluminum, plastic, cardboard, composted kitchen waste, glass, paper, and textiles.
What are some effects of Deforestation
Loss of important forests (rainforest)
Loss of animal, plant, and insect habitats
Decrease of oxygen production
Increase in carbon dioxide levels in the air
Increase in erosion
Increase in extinction
What are some Effects of Desertification?
Fertile land becomes desert-like
People and animals must move to find other areas to live
