What does a timber mark indicate?
- land classification from where the timber originates.
- If any royalties are due to the provincial government.
- If the timber can be exported before it is manufactured.
What is a timber mark?
An alphanumeric code that is unique to a single parcel or group of like parcels that have common ownership.
What does the forest act specify about the storage of timber with respect to timber marks?
Can not store unscaled timber on crown land or, in prescribed circumstances, private land or,
Remove or transport unscaled timber unless it has been conspicuously marked with the timber mark that pertains to the land.
Where must timber marks be embedded by law?
both ends using a standard marking hammer
How is a timber mark obtained?
By submitting a completed timber mark application form to a Forest Service Office. Ours is in Victoria.
What are scaled timber brands?
Identify the Fd and the scale site from where the logs come from. Required by Law
When must timber be scaled?
As soon as it is feasibly possible after harvesting.
Where must timber be scaled and by whom?
At an official scaling station designated by the MoF and by an official licensed scaler.
What must be done with weigh scaling?
Must have same species on truck load, or if mixed it must be consistent.
Scale loads at random to determine volume to weight ratio.
What is the scribner scale?
Small end of log and length is used. Does not account for taper.
How many board feet can we get from a cubic meter?
Depends on the efficiency of the saw mill. Mathematically we should get 423.6 board feet but average is around 200.
What are statutory log grades?
A log quality classification that was developed by the BC Forest Service to assign log values that can then be used to set stumpage rates for cutting permits. Fixed grades
What are sorts?
Industry standards that allow companies to get maximum value from the logs they have.
What is “pushing” the sort?
Including more lower quality logs than a sort implies when market values are good.
What is a boom stick?
Individual 66’ long logs in a chain of logs that are used to contain other logs for towing.
