Q

What animal species caused a reduction in the harvest of timber in high elevation zones?

A

Mountain Caribou, who depend heavily on high protein lichens on the trees.

Q

What is close utilization?

A

Monistry of forest and range act wanted to utilize more waste. They created incentives to companies that installed debarkers and chippers so that companies would be able to harvest more wood by utilizing the stumpas and tops of trees. By doing this they were able to increase the AAC for those areas that utilized waste.

13
Q

What is the formula for AAC dettermination?

Do we still use this formula for AAC calculation?

A

AAC = SUM(Volume of mature timber/ Rotation) + MAI

This formula only gives a starting value for a much more complex formula that take into account operating and manufacturing costs, non timber resource values, biodiversity, economic stability, losses to pathogens.

16
Q

Who determines AAC for WLLA’s

A

Regional Manager or District Manager

17
Q

Who sets AAC for CFA’s and FNWL’s

A

Regional manager or regional managers designate

18
Q

What are some important factors that the chief forester must consider when determining AAC for TSAAs

A

Rate of timber production

i. composition and expected growth rate of forest
ii. expected time of re-establishment post denudation
iii. silviculture treatments expected
iv. expected close utilization standards and DWB factors
v. constraints on timber production in area

b) economic and social objectives
c) implications of alternative rates of harvesting

19
Q

Is setting the AAC a calculation?

A

No. It is an independent decision made by the minister of Forests, taking into account calculations made by chief forester, regional manager, district manager and RM’s designate.

20
Q

What are the 5 steps in AAC determination?

A
  1. Preparation of data package
  2. Public consultation and review
  3. Analysis report
  4. Public consultation and review
  5. AAC determination and rational statement
21
Q

What event is responsible for the increase in volume harvested under PSYU’s in the 1960’s?

A

Introduction of close utilization

22
Q

What replaced PSYU’s? When?

A

TSA’s in 1981.

23
Q

What does the preparation of the data package entail?

A
  • Description of TSA

- Information on current management regime (landbase/growth and yield).

24
Q

What does the analysis report entail?

A

Timber supply analysis

Socioeconomic analysis

25
Q

How is area based AAC calculated?

say your block has 1000 ha and the rotation age is 100.

A

1000/100=10

this is saying that the 10 hectares you harvest should be available to harvest again in 100 years.

26
Q

what is net timber harvesting land base?

A

gross area of management unit - all areas that will not contribute to growing/harvesting.

27
Q

how do you calculate MAI?

A

volume at rotation / rotation period = MAI m3/yr

MAI/m3/yr / area (ha) = MAI/m3/ha/yr

28
Q

what is Mean Annual Increment?

A

Amount of wood that is added per year on average

-the answer to sustained yield
