What is God’s Will?
Everything that happens is what god wants to happen
Gives Muslims confidence when something goes wrong, because they know its part of God’s plan for them
Six Articles of Faith (Sunni Islam)
- Tawhid - Oneness of God
- Angels - they pass on God’s message to the prophets
- Holy books - Respect for these
- Prophets - Respect for them
- Day of Judgement - Belief in judgement and being sent to paradise or hell at the end of the world
- Supremacy of God’s Will - Nothing happens unless God wants it to happen
Five Roots of ‘Usul ad-Din (Shi’a Islam)
- Tawhid - Oneness of God
- Prophethood - Respect for prophets
- Adalat - God will judge everyone on the day of judgement
- Imamate - Respect for 12 Imams chosen by God to lead after Muhammad died
- Resurrection - Belief that after death, Muslims will be resurrected and judged by God
What are the 6 qualities of God?
Transcendent immanent Beneficent Omnipotent Merciful Fair and Just
Transcendent
God created the universe so is beyong it and not limited by the physical world
Immanent
God is present everywhere in the world and universe. God is within all thing sand involved with life on Earth
Beneficent
God is omnibenevolent
Omnipotent
All powerful
Merciful
Shows compassion, cares for people, forgives those who are sorry
Fair and Just
Treats everyone fairly, judges people on the day of Judgeement
How can God be transcendent and Immanent at the same time?
Although he created the universe and is outside of it, he is also within all things and able to act within it because he is all powerful
Angels
Spiritual beings who serve God and pass his message through to the prophets
Nature / Role of Angels
Pure and Sinless Spiritual Beings created by God Constantly serve God Have no free will, do only what God wants them to do Can take human form
How do angels benefit people
Act as messengers of God
Take care of people throughout their lives
Record what people do in the ‘book of deeds’
Take people’s souls to God after they die
Who are the two most important angels in Islam
Jibril and Mika’il
What did the Angel Jibril do?
Angel of revelation
Purified Muhammad when he was young
Recited Qur’an to Muhammad and passed on God’s messages to him
Therefore played a crucial role in communicating Islam to humanity
What did the angel Mika’il do?
Angel of Mercy
Brings nourishment to earth
Rewards people for good deeds

God knows or determines everything that will happen in the universe
Sunni belief of Predestination
God has already determined everything that will happen in the universe.
Humans do not have freedom to change their destiny, God has plans for everyone

Surah 9:51 Quran - “Only what God has decreed will happen to us”
Shi’a beliefs in predestination
God KNOWS everything that is going to happen.
God is the creator of time, so can see everything that will every happen, so he knows the decisions people will make.
They still have the free will to make the choice themselves

Surah 13:11 - “God does not change the condition of a people unless they change what is in themselves”
Day of judgement
God judges everyone for everything they have done in their lives, and send them to paradise or hell as a result
Akhirah
Everlasting life after death
What does belief in Akhirah do?
Encourages Muslims to take responsibility for their actions and live in a way that pleases God

Barzakh
Day of Judgement

After death, the wait until the Day of Judgement is called Barzakh
Angels are sent to question their faith
Risalah
Belief in prophethood and theirt messages
Prophethood
A gift from God to help humans understand his message
Adam
A prophet who is important to muslims because God gave him knowledge and understanding.
God taught Adam how to love a good life in obedience of God, and Adam passed this trait onto the rest of the human race
Who is Ibrahim
A prophet
He showed devotion to God by passing all his tests and showed great faith in God
Mohammad was one of his descendents

Differences between Sunni and Shi’a
Sunni - caliph should be elected
Shi’a - Imam must be a descendent of Muhammad
Sunni - Qur’an and Sunnah have authority to provide guidance
- Shi’a - Qur’an, Sunnah AND IMAM have authority to provide guidance
Imamate
Imamate is the Shi’a belief that all modern imams should be spiritual descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.
Shi’a Muslims believe that imams protect the religion and help to guide Muslims along the right path.
Today, Shi’a Muslim communities are led by imams, who are seen as having been chosen by God.
