What is dental phobia
Servere dental anxiety - marked and persistent anxiety in relation to situations or objects and interferes on daily life
What are the consitituents of PMMA
Powder - benxoyl peroxide - acts as the initiator
Liquid - methacrylate monomer - dissolves PMMA particles
Why is the material present as powder and liquid?
It ensures polymerisation shrinkage is minimised
The heat of the reaction is reduced
Processing is possible due to the dough technique
2 faults if incorrect ratio of power to liquid for PMMA material
Too much powder - inadequate filling by the monomer of the free space between the powder particles resulting in weak material
Too much monomer - produce excessive polymerisation shrinkage and a loss of quality of fit to the denture bearing surface.
Fault if raising the temperature too quickly in PMMA material
If temp is exceeded before the polymerisation process is completed gaseous monomer will be formed, which is the result of gasous porosity.
