MLS LECTURE 1 Flashcards
A clinical laboratory is:
A lab that performs chemical and microscopic tests/research on blood. Body fluids, and tissues
Define the term “clinical laboratory technicians”.
are professionals that work in a lab to help study and test different samples (whether they were blood samples, urine samples, stool samples, or other cellular matters).
Is the study of the serum and the antigens-antibodies. It can also show/ study pregnancy, arthritis, and autoimmune diseases.
The Immunology Department
Some jobs that a lab tech can work in (other than healthcare centers/hospitals)
Teaching
Peace corps
System analyst
sales
Biostatistician
Technical support
marketing
Instrument manufacturing
State 4 of the duties of a medical lab worker.
1– Performing tests and analysis on human blood, urine, stool, tissues, and spinal fluids
2- Collection and reporting data regarding the test’s results
3- operation sophisticated lab equipment
4- discussing results and findings of lab tests and procedures with physicians
State 5 the qualities that are in a lab professional.
-Observant
- Team work
- Dedication
- Competence
- Organizational skills
- Communication skills
- Honesty
- Good eyesight
- Cooperation
- Dependability
- Caring attitude
State the 5 departments in a lab
1- Hematology
2- Chemistry
3- Immunology
4- Microbiology
5- Molecular Biology
State the difference between a lab (general lab) and a clinical lab (medical lab).
A lab is more about general research and experiments for multiple reasons, whereas a clinical (medical) laboratory focuses on medical purposes (blood tests, research about body tissues, body fluids, etc…) and human beings
The study of Bacteria
Bacteriology
The study of Fungi
Mycology
The study of parasites
Parasitology
The study of viruses
virology
True or False: A lab technologist can work as a salesperson for medical equipment
True
True or False: an institution established curricula in Medical Labs in 1940
False (it was 1980)
what are the challenges that could face in any clinical lab?
1- Coping with rising costs
2- Maintaining Equipment
3- Maintaining quality personnel
4- keeping up with advanced technologies
What are the parts of the organization?
Clinical Lab -> Clinical lab manager -> clinical lab assistant manager -> Supervisor -> Medical Technologist -> Housekeeper
What does the “Chemistry” department handle?
They handle the biochemical changes in the serum and body fluids, body glucose, cholesterol, heart, and liver enzymes.
What is a Lab?
Is a place that is equipped with different instruments, chemicals, and equipment that would help in performing either researches/research activities or experimental work
What is the “Hematology” department?
It is the department that studies the cellular components of blood. However, it is excluded from the blood banks. Doctors usually ask for the CBC test here.
What is the Complete Blood Count (CBC) test?
it’s a usual test asked by doctors and is used to evaluate overall health and detect a wide range of disorders, including, anemia, leukemia, etc.. It would usually show the number of WBC and RBC and the components of the blood. It helps in diagnosing of diseases.
What is the Microbiology department?
It is the department that studies, defines, identifies, and culturize microorganisms
Where is a prefix located in a word and what does it tell us?
it is located before the stem and it can tell us the Location, size, time, number of the subject we’re talking about
Which department tests proteins, DNA, and RNA, as well as including the PCR
Molecular Biology Department
Who can ask a clinical laboratory technician for tests?
Doctors are the only ones who are allowed to ask us (clinical laboratory technicians) for tests since they’re the only ones who diagnose and treat patients.
Epiderms
the outermost layer of the skin
Pathology
the study of pathogens or diseases
phlebitis
inflammation of veins
Hepatoma
cancer of the blood
Dimorphic
two forms
Arthritis
Inflammation of the joints
Oncology
The study of cancer
Bradycardia
slow heart rate
