How does croup present?
Barking cough
Fever
Runny nose
Stridor
How is croup managed?
Give oral dexamethasone immediately
Resolves within 48 hours
Analgesia
Encourage fluids
Admit to hospital if in respiratory failure
What is Bell’s palsy?
Weakness/ paralysis on half of face caused by damage to the facial nerve
Resolves within months
How is Bell’s palsy managed?
- If presenting within 72 hours, prescribe oral prednisolone
- Give advise about keeping eye moisturised and about eating a soft diet is palsy is affecting swallowing
- Refer is suspected cause is motor neurone disease, cancer, trauma, or systemic or local infection
What is the pathophysiology of idiopathic Bell’s palsy?
Inflammation or swelling of the facial nerve
What are some causes of Bell’s palsy?
- Infection like HSV
- Vitamin C deficiency
- Autoimmune
- Idiopathic
