Mixtures And Chromotography Flashcards
Is there a chemical bond between mixtures ?
Unlike a compound there is no chemical bond between the different parts of a mixture
They can be easily separated by filtration, crystallisation, fractional distillation, simple distillation and chromotography
What is air a mixture of ?
Air is a mixture of gases, mainly nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and argon
The gases can be separated fairly easily
What does filtration do ?
Filtration separates insoluble (things that don’t dissolve in water) solids from liquids
What are two ways to separate soluble solids from solutions ?
Evaporation and crystallisation are two ways you can separate soluble solids from solutions
Instructions for evaporation
Pour the solution into an evaporating dish
Slowly heat the solution. The solvent will evaporate and the solution will get more concentrated. Eventually, crystals will start to form
Keep heating the evaporation dish until all you have left are dry crystals
Instructions for crystallisation
Pour the solution into an evaporating dish and gently heat the solution. Some of the solvent will evaporate and the solution I’ll get more concentrated
Once some of the solvent has evaporated or hen you see crystals about to form remove the dish from the heat and leave the solution to cool
Filter the crystals and leave them in a warm place to dry
What is distillation used for ?
Distillation is used to separate mixtures which contain liquids
There are two types of distillation: simple and fractional
What is simple distillation used for ?
Simple distillation is used for separating out a liquid from a solution
What is fractional distillation used for ?
Fractional distillation is used to separate a mixture of liquids
