Compounds Flashcards
When elements react what happens ?
When elements react, atoms combine with other atoms to form compounds
What are compounds ?
Compounds are substances formed from two or more elements, the atoms of each are in fixed proportions throughout the compound and they’re held together by chemical bonds
How do you make bonds ?
Making bonds involve atoms giving away, taking or sharing electrons
(Only the electrons are involved)
What do you need a chemical reaction to do ?
You would need a chemical reaction to separate the original elements from the compounds
What does a compound that is formed from a metal and a non metal consist of ?
A compound that is formed from a metal and a non metal consists of ions
The metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions
The non metals gain electrons to form negative ions
What is ionic bonding ?
Ionic bonding is when the opposite charges (negative and positive) of ions are strongly attracted to eachother
What is a covalent bonding ?
Covalent bonding is when each atom shares an electron with another atom
