Group 1 Metals Flashcards
What are the alkali metals in group 1 ?
Lithium Sodium Potassium Rubidium Caesium Francium They all have one outer shell which causes them to react similarly They are all soft and has low density
Explain the trend in reactivity as you go down group 1
Increasing reactivity- the outer shell is more easily lost as the attraction between the nucleus and electron decreases because the electron is further away from the nucleus the further down you go
Lower melting and boiling points
Higher relative atomic mass
What do alkali metals form with non metals ?
Alkali metals form ionic compounds with non metals
When alkali metals react with water what do they produce ?
When alkali metals react with water they produce hydrogen gas
What do alkali metals that react with chlorine produce ?
Alkali metals that react with chlorine produce salt
What do alkali metals that react with oxygen produce?
Alkali metals that react with oxygen produces a metal oxide
