Group 0 Elements Flashcards
What group 0 elements known as ?
Group 0 elements are known as noble gases
How many electrons do noble gases have ?
They all have eight electrons in their outer shell apart from helium which has two, giving them a full outer shell
What do they exist as ?
Noble gases exist as monatomic gases (single atoms not bonded to eachother)
What colour are noble gases ?
Group 0 gases are colourless gases at room temperature
They are also not flammable- they won’t set on fire
What happens as you go down the group 0 atoms ?
The boiling point of the noble gases increase as you move down the group along with increasing relative atomic mass
The increase in boiling point is due to…
an increase in the number of electrons in each atom leading to greater intermolecular forces between them which need to be overcome
Why is argon very unreactive, why is this ?
Argon is unreactive because it has the maximum number of electrons in its outer shell
