Group 7 Elements Flashcards
What are group 7 elements known as ?
Group 7 elements are know as halogens
What are halogens ?
The halogens are all non metals with coloured vapours
Fluorine- is a very reactive, poisonous yellow gas
Chlorine- is a fairly relative, poisonous dense green gas
Bromine- is a dense, poisonous red/brown liquid
Iodine- is a dark grey crystalline solid or a purple vapour
They all exist as molecules which are pairs of atoms
Trends of halogens
Halogens are less reactive - it’s harder to gain an extra electron, because the outer shell’s further from the nucleus
They have higher melting and boiling points
They have higher relative atomic masses
Why do they all react similarly?
All halogens react similarly because they are all in the same group
What can halogens form ?
Halogens can form molecular compounds
Halogen atoms can share electrons via covalent bonding with other non metals so as to achieve a full outer shell
What can halogens form from metals
Halogens can form ionic bonds with metals
The more reactive a halogen what would it do to the less reactive ones ?
The more reactive a halogen it will displace the less reactive ones
How does a displacement reaction occur ?
A displacement reaction can occur between a more reactive halogen and the salt of a less reactive one
