Q

How can we tell the type of an atom ?

A

In an atom it’s the number of protons in the nucleus that decides what type of atom it is

For example, an atom with one proton in its nucleus is hydrogen and an atom with two protons is helium

Q

How can you tell if it’s an element ?

A

If a substance only contains atoms with the same number of protons it’s called an element

There’s about 100 different elements

Q

What are isotopes ?

A

Isotopes are different forms of the same element, which have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons

So isotopes have the same atomic number but different mass numbers
