Mitosis steps Flashcards
Stages of mitosis?
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase
What happens during prophase? pt1
DNA condenses into chromosomes each consisting of two sister chromatids
What happens during prophase? pt2
Nuclear membrane breaks down; spindle microtubules extend from the MTOC by polymerisation and attach to chromosomes via their kinetochores in the centromere region
What happens during metaphase?
Chromosomes are aligned at the metaphase plate
What happens during anaphase?
Spindle microtubules shorten by depolymerization and sister chromatids are separated, and as a result the chromosomes are pulled to opposite poles
What happens during telophase?
The chromosomes decondense and nuclear membranes are formed around them
